A bench cost represents the fully loaded cost – that is the salary plus all of the overhead and other company-paid employee benefits and costs – of the employee, who is not being paid on the project, sitting unbilled on the bench during a particular month. Resource managers watch for the rate of their bench cost, compared with target utilisation rates, because unutilized consultants represent lost profit on the project.
